Seamless Gutters and Guards, Cut On Site in Allentown

Gutters get treated as trim. On an Allentown home they are structural to how long the fascia, the soffit, and the first three feet of decking survive. Mature street trees drop a heavy load twice a year, older homes carry narrow eaves with almost no overhang, and attached houses often discharge water into a side yard barely wide enough to walk through. Undersized or badly pitched gutters on that setup will find the wall.

This is gutter installation & guards as our Allentown, PA office does it — the same crew, the same number, the same written estimate before anything starts.

We roll seamless aluminum on site, so the run along your front elevation is one continuous piece with joints only at corners and outlets. That matters most on long rowhome frontages where a sectional gutter would carry four or five seams, each of them a future drip stain down the brick. Sizing comes before style: a steep roof delivers water faster than a shallow one, so a small gutter under a steep plane overshoots in a hard rain no matter how clean it is. On the steepest Allentown roofs we go to oversized profile and larger downspouts.

Pitch, hangers and outlets decide whether the system works. A gutter needs a consistent fall toward each outlet — enough to move standing water, not so much that it visibly runs downhill across a straight fascia line. Hangers screwed into solid wood at close spacing hold that pitch through a winter of ice; spike-and-ferrule fastening from the last generation works loose and lets the front lip drop. Outlets belong where the water actually concentrates, which is usually below a valley, and downspouts have to discharge well away from the foundation. Rotten fascia gets replaced before anything is hung on it.

Guards are where we push back hardest. They are worth it under a heavy canopy of maple, oak and sycamore, and they are close to pointless on a house with open sky above it — if your debris load is genuinely light, an annual clean costs less than a guard system and does the same job. Where guards make sense, the type has to match what is actually falling: fine mesh for needles and maple seed, a coarser screen for broad leaf. We will look at your trees, not a catalog, and tell you plainly if you do not need them.

Why Allentown roofs are different

The West End streets near Cedar Creek and the blocks bordering Lehigh Parkway sit under a genuinely heavy canopy, and those homes fill their gutters twice a year — sycamore and maple in fall, seed and blossom in spring. Center City is the opposite problem: little tree cover, but almost no eave overhang and downspouts that empty into narrow walkways between attached homes, so water that misses the gutter hits brick and sidewalk directly. Same city, two entirely different specifications.

Gutter Installation & Guards in Allentown — common questions

Are gutter guards worth it on an Allentown home?

It depends entirely on what is over your roof. Under the mature canopy in the West End, guards pay for themselves in avoided cleanings and avoided ice at a clogged eave. On a Center City block with open sky, they mostly are not needed. Guards also reduce cleaning; they do not eliminate it, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling. We will tell you which situation you are in before quoting.

Why do my gutters overflow even right after they are cleaned?

Usually the gutter is too small or wrongly pitched for the roof above it, not dirty. A steep Allentown roof concentrates a great deal of water into a short length of gutter below a valley, and a standard profile simply cannot take it during a summer downpour. The fixes are an oversized gutter, an extra outlet where the valley lands, or a larger downspout. Cleaning a correctly sized gutter solves the problem; cleaning an undersized one does not.

Where can a downspout discharge on a rowhome with no yard?

That is the standard Allentown constraint. Options are a downspout run to the curb line where the municipality permits it, a tie-in to an existing underground drain if one is present and functional, or an extension carried along a side walkway to open ground. What we will not do is drop it at the foundation, because water there ends up in a basement. We check where the existing line goes before assuming it still works.

Can you replace rotted fascia and soffit at the same time as the gutters?

Yes, and often we have to. Fascia hidden behind an old gutter is frequently soft from years of overflow, and new hangers will not hold in it. Soffit damage usually shows up alongside it, which also matters for attic intake air. We open it up, replace what is bad, and only then hang the new run. Hanging seamless gutter on rotten wood is a repair that fails in a season.

Do gutters cause ice dams in winter?

No, but they show you where one is. A dam forms when heat escaping into the attic melts snow up the slope and the water refreezes at the cold eave. The gutter then fills with ice, which is a symptom. The real fixes are air sealing, insulation and balanced ventilation, plus ice-and-water membrane at the eaves when the roof is replaced. Heat cable can manage a stubborn spot but never addresses the cause.
