Why does a shore roof wear out faster than an inland one?
Salt. Airborne salt keeps working on metal every day of the year, so fasteners, drip edge, valley metal and flashing corrode far sooner than the same components would inland. The shingles themselves often still look serviceable while the metal holding the system together has quietly given up, which is why a coastal inspection has to look at the flashing and fixings first rather than the field.
My Ocean City place is empty all winter. How do I know if something has gone wrong?
You mostly do not, which is the problem. The storms that cause damage here arrive in the months nobody is looking, and a small breach has all winter to soak decking and insulation. Is metal a good idea this close to the ocean?

Coastal exposure demands the right coating and genuinely compatible fasteners, because mismatched metals corrode each other quickly in salt air. Done properly a standing-seam roof handles wind uplift and driven rain very well. Done cheaply it will streak and fail faster than the asphalt roof it replaced.
