Our porch roof is nearly flat and shingled. Is that a problem?
That is among the most common defects we find in Harrisburg. Shingles work by gravity and overlap. Under about three inches of rise per foot, wind-driven rain travels beneath them sideways and the roof leaks no matter how new it is. The fix is a membrane carried up the wall behind proper counterflashing and terminated so water cannot get behind the edge. Half-measures on a low-slope deck buy a single season.
TPO, EPDM, modified bitumen — how do we choose?
By what the roof has to do. TPO is a heat-welded, light-colored sheet that reflects sun, which suits a large exposed roof. EPDM is a durable rubber sheet, forgiving on odd shapes and small residential decks. Modified bitumen goes down in plies and handles foot traffic well. All three work when detailed correctly, and all three fail in the same places: edges, drains and penetrations.
Our house has a flat back and a pitched front. Does that take two contractors?
It should not. A mixed roof lives or dies at the transition where membrane meets shingle field, and splitting that joint between two companies is how it becomes nobody's responsibility. We detail the transition ourselves, with the membrane running up under the shingle course above it and every lap running the direction water travels, and one written scope covers both sides of the joint.
