How much does a roofing contractor charge per hour?

Roofing is priced by the job, not the hour — and that protects you.

Almost no residential roofing is priced by the hour, and you should be cautious of a quote that is. Roofing is quoted by the job, based on measured roof area, pitch, complexity, materials and disposal, because that is the only structure that puts the risk of a job running long on the contractor rather than on the homeowner. Hourly pricing appears occasionally on small diagnostic or handyman-scale repairs, but on anything involving tear-off, decking or a full slope it creates exactly the wrong incentive. What you want instead is a fixed, itemised scope with a clearly stated allowance for the one genuinely unknowable item — how much of the decking underneath is sound. We write that allowance into the estimate up front rather than discovering it on the day.
